Saint Mark's "School"

...where now you can find the entrance of the hospital of San Giovanni e Paolo. Before it was located in Santa Croce district.
The façade of the building is a beautifull example of the Renaissance period. It has been drawn by Jacopo Sansovino in the XVI century, is divided in two parts (corresponding to the two internal rooms) and it’s decorated by statue, “lesene” and “edicole” made by Pietro Lombardo and Bartolomeo Bon.
Unfortunately the internal room has been partially destroyed during the domination of Napoleon (he moved the hospital inside this building). The “scalone” (thi big staircase), made by Codussi, has been distroied in this period and then rebuilt (fortunately!) during the XIX century. Also the most of the paintings has been moved in other buildings or lost, and just few ones came back to their original location. But some are still here in Venice, and to be precise in the Accademia Galleries. You can find the other operas in the Brera’s Art Gallery. Inside of the School you can still admire the gorgeous ceiling in both rooms and some paintings about venetian life. These painting has been made by: Jacopo Palma il Vecchio, Tintoretto, Jacopo Palma il Giovane,Padovanino and Belliniano.
