Around 300 this places was used as Salt storage , in 1322 it becomes a wheat deposit, the government to face the famine tried to store as much wheat as possible.
One of the reasons of the massive storage was due to the need to have an immediate supply of flour
for the government ovens to prepare the biscotto (a sort of dry bread) that was an important part of the food for the marine either military or commercial.
At the end of the Republic the stores where assigned to the the military administration of the Arsenal that made of it one of the most important naval museum in Europe.
